We all have a background in music therapy and are trained to create and adapt music activities for the people in our program, often in the moment. We use music to help children grow in important skills, like physical development, language development and literacy, social-emotional development, and approaches to learning. We also get creative and have a lot of fun singing, dancing, and playing instruments! Learn more about our music enrichment programming here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Music Therapy - What are some misconceptions about Music Therapy?</image:title>
<image:caption>That the client or patient has to have some particular music ability to benefit from music therapy -- they do not. That there is one particular style of music that is more therapeutic than all the rest -- this is not the case. All styles of music can be useful in effecting change in a client or patient's life. The individual's preferences, circumstances and need for treatment, and the client or patient's goals help to determine the types of music a music therapist may use.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Team - Jean Lopardo, MT-BC</image:title>
<image:caption>Jean Lopardo earned a Bachelor of Music Degree at Marywood College (1987) followed by an internship at the Matheny School for children with developmental disabilities. Since then, she has worked with a variety of children and adults as a music therapist and music teacher. She is currently running music enrichment programs at a number of preschools and daycare centers in and around the Philadelphia area. In these programs, she provides the children with opportunities to explore music through singing, instrument play, movement activities, and music listening while helping children foster and develop important social and emotional skills. In addition to working with children, Jean also spends time conducting music therapy sessions at group homes for adults with severe developmental disabilities. Jean has a way of getting these clients to actively participate in music in the smallest ways, whether it is through vocalizations, a strum on the guitar, an eye blink, or just a smile. Jean also has the opportunity to provide her services at Adult day care centers and Assisted Living Facilities. During these sessions, she usually will pick a theme and center the songs she sings around that theme (holidays, news items, etc.) The residents will often perk up when they hear an old familiar tune and many will join in the singing if they are able.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Team - Kim Lyday, MA, MT-BC</image:title>
<image:caption>Kim Lyday, MA, MT-BC Kim Lyday, MA, MT-BC began her music therapy journey in upstate NY, earning her Bachelor's Degree in both Creative Arts in Therapy (concentration in music) and Psychology. There, she spent a semester offering creative music experiences at a local nursing home and children's home, followed by another semester assisting with and leading Music Together classes for small children and parents. Upon graduation, Kim went on to complete her Master's degree in Music Therapy at Immaculata University and chose to obtain her board-certification after graduation. While working a full time job as a direct care staff for adolescents with Autism, Downs Syndrome, and other developmental disabilities, she completed her clinical internship at Inglis House in Philadelphia. Inglis House is a unique residential facility for wheelchair-bound adults with a wide variety of physical and neurological disabilities, including Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Spina Bifida, Parkinson's Disease, Spinal Cord Injuries, Stoke, gun shot wounds, and several other physical disabilities. Upon completion of her internship, she became hired as part of the therapeutic recreation team, working full time. Throughout her time at Inglis, Kim led the vocal choir, and created a variety of groups and 1:1 intervention programs, incorporating gross and fine motor functioning, socialization skills, adapted piano and guitar lessons, communication, memory recall, breath and trunk support, voice projection, and several other goal areas. Now, as a contract music therapist, Kim enjoys offering music therapy sessions to groups and individuals around the Philadelphia area. In her spare time, she enjoys playing with her new daughter, listening to audio books, and spending time in nature. She continues to have a strong thirst for knowledge and self-development, and travels a few times each year to various conferences to constantly enhance mindset, confidence, empowerment, business acumen, and of course, musical skills. Kim resides in Downingtown, PA.</image:caption>
